65 new members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences
According to the "Charter of the Chinese Academy of Sciences" and "Detailed Rules for the Implementation of the Election of Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences", a total of 65 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences were elected in 2021, including 5 female scientists. Among the newly elected academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, there are 12 from the Department of Mathematics and Physics, 11 from the Department of Chemistry, 10 from the Department of Life Sciences and Medicine, 9 from the Department of Earth Sciences, 10 from the Department of Information Technology Sciences, and 13 from the Department of Technical Sciences. The average age of the newly elected academicians is 57.4 years old, the youngest is 45 years old, the oldest is 68 years old, and 76.9% are 60 years old or younger. The structure of the academician team has been further optimized, especially through the special recommendation review mechanism, 5 people were elected in the field of national defense and national security, and 3 people were elected in the field of emerging and interdisciplinary disciplines.
84 new members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering
According to the "Implementation Measures for the Election of Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering" and other regulations, the Chinese Academy of Engineering elected a total of 84 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2021, including 6 female scientists. Among the newly elected academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, there are 11 from the Department of Mechanical and Transportation Engineering, 10 from the Department of Information and Electronic Engineering, 8 from the Department of Chemical, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, 9 from the Department of Energy and Mining Engineering, 10 from the Department of Civil, Water Conservancy and Architectural Engineering, 8 from the Department of Environment and Textile Engineering, 10 from the Department of Agriculture, 11 from the Department of Medicine and Health, and 7 from the Department of Engineering Management. The average age of the newly elected academicians is 58 years old, the youngest is 51 years old, the oldest is 69 years old, and 75% are under 60 years old (inclusive). A group of outstanding engineering and technology experts who have been fighting in major national projects, tackling core technologies, and sticking to the old industrial base in Northeast China and remote areas in the west have been elected.
45 new foreign academicians
In addition, in 2021, 25 new foreign academicians were elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, from 11 countries. Scientists from South Korea and Switzerland were elected as foreign academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences for the first time. 20 new foreign academicians were elected to the Chinese Academy of Engineering. After this election, the total number of academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is 860, and the total number of foreign academicians is 129; the total number of academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering is 971, and the total number of foreign academicians is 111.
